Just around 5,5km from Siem Reap, Angkor Wat was known as "temple city" and it is now considered as the largest religious center of the world. Built in early 12th century, Angkor temple became the symbol of Cambodia even thought it was forgotten in jungles for a long time. In mid - 19th century, a French explorer Henri Mouhot came here and said that "Angkor Wat is greater than all what the Greeks or Romans left us".
Today, Angkor Wat is the main attraction to visit that is a "must" in any Cambodia tour package. The temple was severely damaged by the Cham people, wars and time, but we can still see an impressive complex, architecture and learn a lot about Cambodia legends, life, culture of Khmer people.
A part from Angkor Wat, just a few km to the north is Angkor Thom which was built by king Jayavarman VII as a new temple city and some temples are now covered by giant trees surprisingly.
Visiting both Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom can take you 3-4 days (even more) until you are sick of temples, but you will have to agree that Angkor temples are mysterious, imposing, majestic and must be number one on the list of "things to see" in a life time.
A Cambodia holiday has not just the temples, this country also has unique Apsara dance, pristine beaches in the south, silver pagoda in Phnom Penh, Mekong river and impressive Tonle Sap lake..., but if you have a plan to travel to Cambodia, you should combine other destinations in Laos and Vietnam such as Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa, Hoi An ancient town, Phu Quoc island, Nha Trang, Luang Prabang..., the combination of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia called "Indochina tour package" as it includes the highlights of each country in one holiday and your travel experience to Southeast Asia will be unforgettable.
