Not popular as Cu Chi tunnels due to its location far from other tourist centers, Vinh Moc Tunnels is much more interesting thanks to its longer displaying system with many exhibits showing the real life of soldiers and local people who stayed there for a long time. It is now known as a honourably historical evidence, an underground miniaturized village as well as the largest historical tunnel in the DMZ of Vietnam.
Vinh Moc Tunnels is located in Vinh Thach commune, Vinh Linh Distric, Quang Tri province, just 14Km from the main road of National High Way 1A in Ho Xa commune, Vinh Linh Distric.
Normally, Vinh Moc Tunnels is chosen as a stopover for tourists who travel from Quang Binh to Hue or a day trip from Hue city, besides many other famous historical sites named Quang Tri Old Citadel, Khe Sanh Combat Base, Hien Luong Bridge, Ben Hai River, etc. as this District had been an important battlefield between Vietnam and America. The complex of tunnels in that district has as many as more than 60 tunnels, among which Vinh Moc is the most solid and firm village tunnel, with 3 floors and round staircase, still being intact as in its past days.
The tunnels system was constructed and used from 1966 to 1972 after American forces believed the local villagers were supplying food and armaments to the North and decided to force villagers to leave by releasing tons of bombs to those areas. Then, hidden inside the bushes, Vinh Moc Tunnels had been the place where protected the local and soldiers for many years during the war who survived and even prospered as an underground community including wells, kitchens, rooms for each family and spaces for healthcare. There, 17 children were born that you can even see the Maternity Room with a nurse, a mother and a baby. The tunnel network's total length is nearly 2 km, structured into three floors with the first 13 m beneath the ground, the second 15 m, and the third, 23 and is linked to the sea by seven exits, which also function as ventilators and to a nearby hill by another six.
Now, tourists visit to Vinh Moc Tunnels can visit inside the tunnels for around 500 meters with different chambers. The entrance fee to Vinh Moc Tunnels is around 2 usd.
With all the above outstanding values, all tourists who traveled to both Vinh Moc Tunnels and Cu Chi tunnels said that Vinh Moc Tunnels is worth to see rather than Cu Chi Tunnels based on their real displaying system. However, it is a great idea to visit to both those tunnels to see the differences as well as to learn their important roles in Vietnam War as each one has its own values.
