Overview
The small peninsula were Railay is situated, in between Krabi and Ao Nang is accessible only by boat. The limestone cliffs of Railay now attract rock climbers worldwide but the beaches and the tranquil atmosphere are the reasons why most people on holiday in Thailandwill consider Railay.
How to get there
Boats come from Krabi and dock at East Railay. Ferries from Railay to Ko Phi and further west to Phuket depart from the West Railay beach.
There is an international airport at Krabi so Railay is easily accessible for tourists from far and wide. Indochina tour packages can easily take in this area.
Best time to visit
The high season starts around Christmas and last for four months. After that the rains will appear and last for most of the year but often just in showers each day for an hour or two. Temperatures are fairly constant throughout the year, typical of places fairly close to the equator.
Things to see and do
There are four main areas to Railay:
• Phra Nang
• West Railay is the place for tourists seeking the beach. There are cliffs either side of the beach and long boats for hire.
• East Railay has good shops and restaurants. It has mangroves and no one really swims in this area. There is the Diamond Cave on the trail to Ton Sai.
• Ton Sai is the place for backpackers and rock climbers. No sophistication but such holidaymakers rarely want that anyway.
Railay is basically a place for people looking to relax and sometimes at the end of hectic Thailand tour packages it is just what is needed.
Accommodation
There are interesting accommodation alternatives. Some will select bungalows, other medium range resorts but there is also luxury on West Railay. People onThailand travel packages will be asked to select their accommodation when they make their bookings.
