The outside world first heard about My Khe Beach from American soldiers home on leave from the Vietnam War. It got its name from troops who enjoyed time off relaxing on this beach near Danang in Central Vietnam. Americans love their surfing and this beach is a great place to go today for those who want to indulge their passion in water sports.
You may simply want to sunbathe and that is perfectly fine. If you have a hectic schedule a brief Vietnam beach holiday makes sense within a busy itinerary.
There are plenty of things to do in My Khe beyond sunbathing and water sports. Nearby Hoi An was an important trading port many centuries ago during the Champ Kingdom. The old merchant houses and narrow alleyways are still there to explore while if you want made-to-measure clothes, Hoi An is the place to get them. Most things will be ready the next day and with My Khe just 10 minutes by bus from Hoi An, a second visit is no problem.
Hoi An is a UNESCO World Heritage site while the ancient Imperial Capital of Hue is not far away. Add the wonderful Phing Nga Caves and there is always something to do if you select My Khe from Vietnam beaches for a short stay.
Forbes Magazine once described My Khe as one of the 'World's Most Luxurious Beaches' because once it has been identified, luxury hotels were quick to become involved. It might have been American forces that found it, and backpackers who first visited it as Vietnamese tourism grew, but now it has a rich clientele as well.
Transport options are good and there are even international flight connections into Danang from many parts of Asia. If you jump in a taxi you can be on the beach in less than half an hour. The best time to visit My Khe is between May and October when the days are guaranteed to be dry and the sea will be at its clearest.
